Setting & Activities

Homepage StorytimeWelland Pre-school is run by a committee of parents/carers – ensuring the most important people in a child’s life can contribute to their care

The care and education offered by our setting helps children to learn about the world around them by providing interesting activities that are appropriate for their age and stage of development. Each child’s interests and learning styles are key factors in the way toys and activities are organised and planned.

Our setting uses the practice guidance Early Years Foundation Stage to plan and offers a range of play activities through both indoor and outdoor play areas.

The areas of learning and development are:

  • Personal, social and emotional development;
  • Physical development
  • Communication and language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

All of our activities, including the really messy ones, are based on a theme and geared for fun and learning. Themes can include colours, shapes, numbers, seasons and people who help.

We experience different cultures by studying and celebrating events such as Diwali and Chinese New Year.  We also experience the foods of different cultures at snack times e.g. poppadoms or noodles.

We complete a variety of activities that are held over at Welland Primary school such as; P.E. Curriculum & Facilities Trikes

Responsibilities are offered to the children on a daily basis which boosts confidence and self-esteem.  They love to wash up after snack time, to help with a piece of equipment or to show a toy and talk about it at group time.

We have a display table where children are able to contribute their own things and ‘finds’ which link to our topic and can be admired and shared with their friends.  This helps reinforce and extend their knowledge through participation both in the setting and outside it.

We have also introduced Chatterbox’s which are shoe box’s decorated by the children and then they put things in there that are special to them. We have done this to help build their confidence and allow them time to talk about things that are important to them, these are great for Emotional Literacy.

Children’s thoughts and ideas are valued and encouraged. We have introduced an Implementation Book which we use at circle times to get the children’s ideas we use this for things like the theme we are going to be doing. We like to take turns to share news and discuss the days activities.

We are members of the Early Years Alliance and are constantly in touch with all new thinking in child education and care.

There are policies and procedures in place that all staff understand and follow to ensure that children are fully safeguarded. These are available to download here.
